Aspirations and Human Imperfections
Our founders and predecessors espoused high values and aspirations. So high, in fact, that they failed, as humans usually do, to live up to the ideals they so ardently professed. Yet, their failures do not diminish the ideals they espoused and helped to spread throughout the world.
At the core of those ideals are freedom, equality of opportunity, and the equal value of every individual. Every person has the right to be free from the tyranny of the government and of the majority. Everyone has the right to live as she or he desires, so long as she or he doesn’t hurt, endanger, or burden others.
